FORENSIC EDUCATION SERIES

Since the mid 1970s, Canadian healthcare practitioners have recognized the importance of a customized response to the care provided for persons affected by intentional violence. The Canadian Forensic Health Corporation Education Series provides accredited theory courses which support forensic healthcare practitioners, judicial entities, victim service providers, and first responders to ensure a thorough comprehension of applied forensic science principles in the health and well-being of persons affected by intentional violence in Canada.

SEXUAL ASSAULT FORENSIC/NURSE EXAMINER - ADULT/ADOLESCENT

​This course will provide the Physician, Nurse Practitioner, and/or Registered Nurse with the knowledge, skills, and judgment to provide trauma-informed, evidence-aware, competent, and skillful care to the adult or adolescent patient being evaluated for sexual assault. Elements of the course will explore the assessment, interpretation, collection, and processing of forensic health information from the patient. This course meets the required theoretical education component for preparation to apply for the SANE-A credential.  This course is accredited by the International Association of Forensic Nurses ​​and meets the criteria set forth by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission of Accreditation (ANCC COA).  Approval number: AU101122.CanadianForensicHealthCorp. 

SEXUAL ASSAULT FORENSIC/NURSE EXAMINER - PEDIATRIC

This course will provide the Physician, Nurse Practitioner, and/or Registered Nurse with the foundational knowledge, skills, and judgment to provide trauma-informed, evidence-aware, competent, and skillful care to the pediatric patient being evaluated for abuse or sexual assault. Elements of the course will explore the assessment, interpretation, collection, and processing of forensic health information from the patient. This course meets the required theoretical education component to apply for the SANE-P credential. This course is accredited by the International Association of Forensic Nurses and meets the criteria set forth by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation (ANCC COA).  Approval number:

SEXUAL ASSAULT FORENSIC/NURSE EXAMINER - ADULT/ADOLESCENT/PEDIATRIC

This course will provide the Physician, Nurse Practitioner, and/or Registered Nurse with the foundational knowledge, skills, and judgment to provide trauma-informed, evidence-aware, competent, and skillful care to all patients across the life span being evaluated for abuse or sexual assault. Elements of this course will explore the assessment, interpretation, collection, and processing of forensic health information from the patient.

FORENSIC HEALTHCARE: CRIMINAL JUSTICE MEMBERS

In 2021, the National Judicial Institute supported the incorporating education for new judges to include specific education surrounding sexual assault. This course will examine the implications of interpersonal violence through the lens of forensic healthcare and add an understanding of the physiological and psychological impact of interpersonal trauma on the human body. Lead by internationally certified and currently practicing Forensic Healthcare Specialists, this course will equip members of the judicial system with the knowledge, skill, and judgement to customize their professional practice in a manner that is respectful to the sexual assault survivor.

PRINCIPLES OF FORENSIC HEALTH SCIENCE

This course explores principles of forensic science, providing an overview of living forensics related to when the human body is the crime scene. Practices used to ensure continuity of evidence are explored. Objective of this course aims to provide a thorough overview of the scientific rationale for techniques used to examine and interpret evidence in the case of criminal and civil proceedings. 

TRAUMA INFORMED PRACTICE

This course will empower all professionals who interact with victims of violence to enhance their understanding of presenting behaviours and needs, and holistically enhance their approach to persons affected by violence by applying a trauma-informed lens to their role. Exposure to incidents which exceed an individual’s perceived ability to cope leads to both short and long-term adverse effects on the individual’s mental, physical, and emotional functioning as well as spiritual well-being. In this course the professional will learn how to apply trauma informed principles to their practice.
