CLINICAL SKILLS WORKSHOPS

The Clinical Skills Workshops offered by Canadian Forensic Health Corporation will provide hands-on training based on forensic principles in order for the practitioner to acquire the skills needed in the clinical setting.

CLINICAL SKILLS LAB TRAINING:
COLLECTION OF LIVING FORENSIC EXHIBITS

This course is designed for healthcare providers who may be asked to collect forensic exhibits using the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sexual Assault Examination Kit (RCMP SAEK) when caring for people who have experienced a sexual assault.  An overview of foundational forensic principles to ensure the integrity of evidence will be examined, along with best practice collection procedures and documentation standards. A thorough exploration of the contents of the kit will be completed in a clinical lab setting. Simulated sexual assault cases will provide the backdrop for developing critical thinking skills for the appropriate use of the RCMP SAEK.  This 2-day workshop complements the Education Series:  Sexual Assault Forensic/Nurse Examiner (SAFE/SANE) training courses and will provide access to live and simulation experiences to acquire the essential skills required to care for the adult/adolescent patient who reports sexual assault.  Required prerequisite: completion of an accredited SAFE/SANE course and/or comparable training and experience.

LIVING FORENSIC SCIENCE AND PRACTICE

This workshop is designed for both healthcare and justice system professionals who work with people who may be affected by violence. Evidence assessment, identification, and collection, including documentation and preservation, will be examined. Principles of forensic science will be reviewed to rationalize actions in the skills required to process evidence and support a thorough understanding of what to do and why. Scenarios will include cases of sexual assault, domestic violence, child maltreatment, elder abuse, and human trafficking in which the learned clinical skills will be applied.

FORENSIC PHOTOGRAPHY FOR HEALTHCARE PROVIDERS

For currently practicing forensic healthcare providers, this course examines the standards of practice for accurate and reliable photo-documentation of clinical findings identified during a medical-forensic examination of the human body.  This workshop will provide hands-on training and practice in the photo-documentation of injuries resulting from trauma and violence. Assessment, evaluation, and documentation of injuries using photography will be explored. Essential skills include principles of photography, best practice techniques, and contextual considerations to ensure that photo-documentation serves as credible evidence in the legal process.

FORENSIC IDENTIFICATION, ASSESSMENT, AND DOCUMENTATION OF INJURIES

The recognition, identification, assessment, evaluation, and documentation of injuries resulting from trauma are essential skills required when responding to incidents of intentional violence. This workshop enhances the practitioner’s ability to examine the human body and evaluate the relationship of the reported mechanism of injury with physiological findings. In addition, the practice of peer review will be used to facilitate the development of skills in injury identification and documentation. The main objective of this workshop aims to ensure consistency and reliability of findings including head trauma, strangulation, blunt and sharp force injuries, and gunshot wounds.

FORENSIC HEALTHCARE: FIRST RESPONDERS

In the uncontrolled environments in which first responders function, trauma-informed patient care and evidence integrity can go hand-in-hand. This course will equip the first responder with on-scene forensic principles that will complement rapid patient assessment and lead to decisive interventions which will incorporate a forensic lens to the care of patients affected by intentional violence.
